      <image:title>ARTWORK - Bystanders, 2002</image:title>
<image:caption>20 x 30" and 50 x 60" Fujiflex print, edition 10 The journey that Mann records, which is apparently endless, is also apparently to nowhere in particular. It just keeps going on and on, interrupted only by motel rooms, places which are, of course, anything but destinations. They are, instead, bland and forgettable on purpose, empty stages from which the actors have always just departed or on which they have not yet appeared... And this is what Mann's photos are really about: they're pictures of half-remembered dramas, objects caught out of the corner of the eye. They're pictures of the spirits that haunt the vast empty places along the American road, linger in the American soul. - Mark Van de Walle, 2003  </image:caption>

<image:caption>The CACTI series comes from my long-time interest in the non-object and capturing the memory of a thing. In the merging of two disparate materials, plaster casting and a found object container, there is a beautiful contrast that is created. Ideas of the cacti’s strength and resiliency amid scarcity is unified with vessels signifying prosperity and abundance. Contrary to a cacti’s symbolic durability, the plaster forms made from originally casting clay, are inherently fragile in nature and yet cannot be hurt by neglect or lack of care.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ARTWORK - Souvenir, Sleepwalker, 2010</image:title>
<image:caption>20 x 24" Fujiflex print, edition 5 Postcards sent and saved from 1960s and 1970s Middle American vacations form the illusionary foundation for Mark Mann's photographic art. Mann deploys images of suburban families on the road and places them in empty, imprisoning spaces. These pictures create an uneasy tension between truth and fiction. They cite artifacts from the time, such as postcards of roadside motels and generic vacation destinations that refer to memories of family journeys. However, these journeys are mixed with dreamlike symbolism to create iconic images that go beyond memory. Mann starts with vintage postcards and manipulates these reproductions using computer technology. He imitates the color and composition of his source material, but creates staged dramas that are about the loneliness and alienation that accompanies the American dream. - Philip Brookman, Senior Curator of Photography and Media Arts, The Corcoran Museum of Art</image:caption>

<image:title>ARTWORK - Red Shift Series, Couple with Fiesta Skull, 2019</image:title>
<image:caption>14 x 14” acrylic on paper This series of drawings is influenced by the “red shifting” of photographic prints that occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s due to the instability of the paper and dyes used in some print processes at the time. With that in mind, I use a combination of odd scenes and physical struggles to capture a side of the American character experiencing the effects of a shifting environment— both physical and cultural that results in a feeling of absurdity and a dark sense humor; a space where both crisis and play intersect. Moments involving individuals or groups and their points of connection are belied by a sense of disconnect, subverting an otherwise pleasant scene. These narratives present an ambivalence to surreal, symbolically threatening poolside creatures, turning somewhat mundane circumstances into revelatory glimpses of the world and the people around us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ARTWORK - Deep End, 2001</image:title>
<image:caption>20 x 24" and 40 x 50" Fujiflex print, edition 10 The photo-based images from this series are derived from the ubiquitous "Wish you were here" postcards from the 1960s and 70s. Through the use of digital technology, fragments from the postcards are enlarged, added to, subtracted from and manipulated to create a nostalgic effect in a highly abstract contemporary medium. My aim is to translate the strange and sentimental occurrences in life through the fictional narrative of the family vacation. My process draws upon many visual references-- film, video, photography, commercial printmaking and the digital image. This "sampling" is reflective of the means in which we communicate at high speed and over great distances-- all the while becoming distorted, pixilated and several generations removed from the original experiences that were recorded.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>ARTWORK - O Uncolored People, Maxine 2015</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrylic on canvas, 7 x 7" O Uncolored People is an ongoing series of paintings depicting burnt sunbathers as a means to express a side of the American character weary from excess and leisure and instilled with a dark sense humor. As a group, these people of Anglo descent are over-exposed and vulnerable to a changing world where American superiority is challenged and diversity is seen as more of a threat than something to be valued. My goal is to instill qualities of both the strange and sentimental in these pictures—much the same way the most miserable of vacations can, over time, become the fondest of memories. Mark Mann’s artwork touches on the interrelations of nostalgia, Americana, history, culture, memory and identity. This is achieved through the physical manipulation and contextual isolation of found imagery. The resulting paintings and sculptures become ruminations on the recent clashes over our shared American legacy. - Owen Hohoulis, Owen James Gallery</image:caption>

      <image:title>ARTWORK - Malpais, Static, 2017</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by past covers of the monthly travel magazine Arizona Highways (1970s-80s), this group of paintings depicts the idealized beauty of the American West, while inverting its natural color scheme to produce a sickly and strange monochromatic dreamscape. They are scenes intended to feel both familiar and foreign; reflecting the dual realities that co-exist in our polarized American society.
